Ideas to
use the materials
Included is an assortment of materials to support your vending machine program.
Use the static clings on the glass front of the machine. Write a featured flavor
or the price per pint on the cling with an indelible marker. Write the location
of the machine and the price for milk on the posters and hang them in areas around
the school to remind students to buy milk. Put the magic cling banner on nearby
walls to draw attention to the machine. Select a group of students to wear got
milk? pins on their jackets or back packs as a walking reminder. Additional merchandise
can be ordered from the enclosed Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board and the got milk?
catalogs. |
 |
Extreme flavors
Be sure the machine is well stocked with several flavors and types of milk. A
national milk vending study has shown that flavored milk sells at the rate
of 9:1 when compared to white milk. If possible, change available flavors monthly
to keep student boredom low and interest high. Feature new flavors by marking
pint caps and allowing students who bring caps in to redeem them for an extra
slice of pizza with lunch. |
 |
Bake sales can sell
milk
Talk to the groups in the school that may be conducting bake sales and invite
them to have their sale near the machine. Nothing tastes better with cookies
or cupcakes than fresh cold milk. |
 |
Rewards program
Mark a few of the pint caps in the machine with an indelible marker. Students
who bring the lucky cap in to the cafeteria can get a free cookie or dessert
with their lunch or a free bagel or muffin for breakfast. |
 |
Tell them . . . and
tell them again
Place signs and posters around the school to highlight the location of the machine
and the flavors available. Be sure to put signs in the locker rooms to remind
student athletes they can get a milk after practice every day. If your school
has an electronic bulletin board, post a reminder to stop and get a cold flavored
milk from the machine every day. Use one of the PA announcements every Monday
morning for a month. |
 |
Hold a contest
Ask the Health or Family and Consumer Science teachers to have a poster or slogan
contest featuring milk vs. soda consumption. Use the posters to remind the
students that milk "does a body good." |
 |
Tell parents and educators
Use parent and teacher newsletters to remind parents and staff that milk is available
as a beverage choice around the clock from the new vending machine. Enlist
their help to remind students to choose milk instead of soda from the vending
machines. Parent information to place in a newsletter or on a menu back is
included with this packet. |
