Fuel Up to Play 60 Success Stories

Schools in Wisconsin are empowering students to stay healthy by exercising
for at least 60 minutes each day and making healthy food choices that include
fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low fat dairy.

Middle schools during the 2009-2010 school year activated student teams
that generated ideas:

  • South Milwaukee Middle School: Students combined healthy eating and recycling by replacing cartons with 8 ounce containers of plastic milk with school meals. The new package helped increase milk consumption at school lunch and decrease waste after each meal. Students got active when teachers throughout the school building introduced 2-3 minute activity breaks in classrooms, motivating students to move and learn at the same time.

  • Parkview Middle School (Ashwaubenon): Activity increased when the students introduced Wii Fit Equipment in the weight room and Truckin Tuesdays featured an after school walking club. Healthy options like string cheese were included as part of the snacks at school dances and Fruit Smoothies made with low fat milk, bananas and strawberries replaced fruit punch at school events. The cafeteria salad bar is featuring a wider variety of vegetables and fresh fruit is served daily. All bread and rolls are whole grain and a small vegetable garden was planted in back of the school.

  • John Muir Middle School (Wausau): The Fuel Up to Play Student Team introduced grab 'n go breakfast at the front door of the school and helped encourage students to eat school breakfast every day before starting class. The school created a Toboggan Hill for students—custodians cleared trees off the hill behind the school and school administrators and lunch duty staff assist in loading toboggans and monitoring the hill every snowy day during the lunch recess break. (Everyone can still be active, even in Wisconsin Winter!)

  • Delong Middle School (Eau Claire): The Wellness Warriors at the school awarded prizes to students eating healthy foods at school lunch. They worked with a local professional photographer and created new posters with health messages to embellish the school cafeteria. The school fitness center and gym were opened for before school workouts each school day and yoga classes were held after school two days every week. Students organized a special health fair for all 6th graders, reminding all their classmates of the importance of choosing healthy food and getting active each day. Healthy activities were tracked online as part of the Fuel Up To Play program and the Principal offered to campout on the roof of the school if the students could achieve national point ranking.

  • Marshall Middle School (Janesville): FUTP Students designed an assembly presentation to "get the message" out to the student body. They introduced a Grab N Go breakfast for each student during WKCE test week and then continued to offer this menu as part of their breakfast expansion. To get active, students started a Walk It! Club and prizes were awarded to students who walked, rode bikes of skateboarded to school each day. To keep involved, the staff and principal meet the students each morning to punch cards for those walking to school.

  • Park View Middle School (Mukwonago): FUTP60 students decorated a large bulletin board at the front of the school building and the Kick Off event featured a skit written and performed by the student team. In-house Mustang TV featured regular student reminders and trivia contests about healthy eating and physical activity. On Fitness Fridays and Walking Wednesdays, students walk the school halls for 15 minutes while music is playing over the PA system. Chocolate milk was offered as a special recovery beverage after the first all school walk in the spring.
